Comfrey Dewgold
Comfrey “Frey” Dewgold
Character Traits
A young Gnome with bright hazel eyes and an ever‑present satchel of herb shears, Frey greets the world with unassuming warmth. He cares little for status or etiquette—wealth, fancy titles, and polished manners leave him unimpressed—but he believes, to his core, that everyone carries a duty to uplift the community. Family is paramount: any slight against a Dewgold sibling ignites a spark of indignation that Frey will not easily forget. Years of playful mockery as the youngest child thickened his skin, yet barbs questioning his utility or usefulness wound deeply. Surrounded by prodigious alchemist siblings, Frey struggles with confidence, convinced that true strength looks effortless in the hands of geniuses. Accordingly, he hides the sweat behind his own achievements, masking doubt beneath gentle smiles. His greatest virtue is an instinctive protectiveness—he will brave any risk for friends or kin—while his reluctance to question their motives, and a tendency to avoid bold leaps unless others are threatened, remains his chief flaw.
Background
Born in Sildenwood, near the shadowed verge of the Forgotten Forest, Frey belonged to the renowned Dewgold family of alchemists—healers whose shimmering tonics are prized even in lofty Silinea. Devoted to accessible care, the Dewgolds refuse exclusive contracts or inflated prices, often trading at cost for underprivileged folk rather than courting elven nobility. Unfortunately, Frey displayed no gift for transmutation circles or delicate distillations. Labeled the “sub‑par alchemist,” he channeled his longing to contribute into a new craft: venturing into the perilous forest to gather rare reagents. The Forgotten Forest, notorious for monsters and disappearances, forged Frey into a capable Ranger. He learned to parse deceptive foliage, track elusive blooms, and dispatch lurking beasts.
Everything changed when an enigmatic adventurer—never offering the same name twice—wandered into the Dewgold shop. Frey dubbed him “Pointy‑Hat.” The stranger traded research notes with Frey’s parents and began accompanying Frey ever deeper into the forest, recognizing the gnome’s real talent. Pointy‑Hat became mentor and friend, until a hurried summons drew him away. Overnight he vanished, leaving three items: a weather‑worn notebook filled with ranger lore, a folded flyer for the Portglassia adventurers’ registration, and a shard of rust‑flecked green amulet tucked in a secret pouch. On the notebook’s seal Frey deciphered the cryptic words: “To the Herald — The Rainmaker.”
Soon after, the forest itself seemed to sour—fewer blossoms, skittish wildlife, ingredients harder to find. Determined to strengthen his skills, aid his struggling family with gold, and one day stand beside Pointy‑Hat as an equal, Frey resolved to journey south and register as an adventurer in Portglassia.
